Amendment 79 Colorado | Right to Know CO

Statement from the Issue Committee on the Passage of Amendment 79

Right to Know CO is disappointed by the passage of Amendment 79, which codifies unrestricted and unregulated abortion for all nine months, removes parental rights when their minors seek or are coerced into abortion, and forces Colorado taxpayers to pay for abortion procedures and travel against their conscience. This passage will result in the loss of tens of thousands of preborn babies’ lives per year, and hurt their mothers and families. We know if more Coloradans knew about the harms of 79, they would not have voted for it.

Despite the passage of this harmful amendment, we are encouraged by the massive compassion and efforts by the pro-life community, and unification of this diverse group of member organizations. We are also thankful for the many benefactors who poured in their gifts to defeat Amendment 79.

Right to Know CO is the issue committee of Pro-Life Colorado 501(c)3. Pro-Life Colorado is the unified coalition of over 50 organizations dedicated to protecting lives of preborn children and caring for their mothers and families. Pro-Life CO came together in 2022 to oppose the Reproductive Health Equity Act (RHEA) and subsequent abortion laws, and now stand as a more unified pro-life movement than ever before.

Pro-Life CO will continue to advocate to protect preborn children and help women in difficult pregnancies and educate the public on the harms of abortion and alternatives available to women. We will work to ensure that no woman, regardless of circumstances of her pregnancy or demographic background or socioeconomic status, faces pregnancy alone or lacks the resources and support necessary to choose life for her child. For instance, nearly 40 percent of Colorado counties are maternity deserts, with no maternity providers or birthing centers, which increases the risk of maternal and infant mortality and makes some women feel that their only option is abortion. But abortion is not the solution to these problems. It is the mission of Pro-Life CO and its member organizations to provide the necessary education and outreach to make sure women know their options and resources are available.

The battle for life in Colorado is not over, and we, as Pro-Life CO coalition of 50+ diverse member organizations, will continue the important work to cultivate a culture of life in our state.

Why vote "No" on Amendment 79?

This amendment creates a constitutional “right” to unrestricted abortion and allows for taxpayer-funded abortion by repealing the constitutional ban on public funding. This is what it means...

Parental Notice

It bans parental notice laws. There is no age restriction on abortion in Colorado; if a boyfriend or school counselor is pressuring a 15-year-old girl to have an abortion, that 15-year old’s parents have a right to know. But the amendment outlaws parental notice — it’s a constitutional amendment that forbids a parental notice requirement in Colorado.

Late Abortions

It bans any limits on late abortions. Even reasonable limits such as prohibiting abortions in the ninth month on healthy mothers and healthy babies would be illegal under the amendment — resulting in more third trimester abortions even after a baby can feel pain and survive outside of the womb.

Taxpayer Funding

It clears the way for taxpayer-funded abortion with no reasonable restrictions or limits of any kind. This includes the ability of the state legislature to force taxpayers to pay for late abortions for in-state and out-of-state pregnant women.

Reckless and Extreme

It goes far beyond what Roe v. Wade authorized, banning any reasonable limits. Colorado already has some of the strongest protections for abortion rights of any state in the nation by allowing legal protection for all nine months of pregnancy.

Help Us Stop This Reckless Constitutional Amendment

Abortion is already legal in Colorado. Amendment 79 goes too far -- 79 tramples on the rights of parents. It is too extreme for Colorado.
